Crabulon Trophy.png "The mycelium exhibits extraordinary control and dexterity over the husk" Crabulon Trophy.png

Crabulon is a Pre-Hardmode boss. It is intended to be fought after the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu. There are three "skins" the boss can have: Crabby, Hairy, or Shroomy. The skin is selected using a seed that is based on the world's seed, and advances with how many Crabulon bosses are currently alive, and how many have been defeated previously.

Spawn

If Crabulon has not been previously defeated, it will spawn naturally in Glowing Mushroom biomes with its small head and antennae peeking out of the ground. It will spawn less frequently before the world's evil boss has been defeated, and more frequently afterwards. The head emits a cyan light, and makes chittering noises occasionally. Jumping on this exposed head or destroying any blocks near it will instantly spawn Crabulon.

Its alternate and much easier summoning method is the Hookstaff, found as an ambient tile either in the ground on Mushroom Grass, hanging on the wall of a Glowing Mushroom cabin, or crafted by the player. Using the tool on any grass in the biome will cause Crabulon to spawn in the area used.

Behavior

The battle starts with Crabulon rising from the ground with mycelial vines which puppet the husk. During the first phase, the player is able to walk underneath its body unharmed, similar to Deerclops. Crabulon has 7 different attacks, which are randomly selected based on several factors, such as how horizontally or vertically aligned the player is with Crabulon, how many Spore Buds are active, or how far the player is from the boss.

Once defeated, Crabulon will enter its death state. In this state, it no longer moves and will die after taking 5 hits, or after 7.5 seconds have passed. If in Expert Mode or higher, it will instead enter a desperation phase at 10% total health. After being brought to a lower health it will then proceed to enter its death state.

Crabulon will always navigate towards its target, able to step up short heights onto platforms, and even climbing on background walls to reach the player.

If the player dies during the fight, or if Crabulon runs out of targets, it will dance above the player before scurrying off-screen.

Attacks

Crabulon's attacks are selected using a weighted random value, with different conditions affecting how likely the boss is to select a given attack. Crabulon additionally has a 3 / 2.3 Expert Mode second cooldown between attacks that is additionally further lowered depending on Crabulons current health. This cooldown, however, will never go below 1 second. Crabulon will also lower the chance of whatever attack it uses from occurring as the next attack by 90% once used. This is to negate repetitive attacks, and this effect will be removed after another attack is used. There are several different factors which alter the chance of an attack being selected, which are listed below with each attack:

  • When in close range or at a lower height relative to Crabulon, it is more likely to use one of its two melee attacks, being either a slam or a snip. Once it uses one of these attacks, the chance of any melee attacks of occurring as the next attack lowers by 70%.
    • The slam will come from Crabulon slamming its claw overhead and will cause a shockwave when impacting the ground. The player cannot move towards Crabulon to avoid this attack as it will backup when approached.
    • The snip will come from Crabulon quickly dashing towards the player with their claw. It is avoided by jumping over it.
  • When the player is far away from Crabulon, it is more likely to use its slingshot or dash moves.
    • The slingshot will begin with Crabulon firing a harmless mycelium thread at the player and quickly swinging to them. Crabulon will not deal any contact damage and instead will dismount from its slingshot close to the player. It will always follow up this move with either melee attack.
    • The dash will be telegraphed by Crabulon shaking, followed by it quickly crawling along the walls in the player's direction.
  • If there are currently not many Spore Buds in the area or the player is located in an area fairly clean of Spore Buds, Crabulon becomes more likely to use two variants, being mines or mortars.
    • The mines will be telegraphed by Crabulon lightly swaying and leaking gas. This will spawn up to 3 / 4 Expert Mode Spore Buds. After a short period of 1.8 seconds, they will begin leaking harmful gas that will inflict the Spored debuff. They will last for 15 seconds by default, but this timer is lowered depending on how much damage is inflicted. They can additionally be killed outright.
    • Spore Buds have a 50% chance to drop a Spore HeartSpore Heart on death (increased to 100% if the player has the Spored debuff). Spore Hearts heal the player for 10 health by default, and 50 if the player has the Spored debuff, which will also clear the debuff.
    • The mortar will be telegraphed by an aggressive shake but also a large shockwave-like effect and will fire a gravity-effected Spore Bud after 0.8 / 0.5 Expert Mode seconds. Once it lands, it will bloom after a short delay. This bud follows the same rules for how long it lasts as the mine variant.
  • Crabulon can also use a dropping slam in which Crabulon will go limp and be lifted by various mycelium roots that will impale its shell. It will remain in a idled telegraphed state for 1.5 / 0.9 Expert Mode seconds before ascending above the player. It will linger in the air above the player for a short while before being dropped and slamming into the ground, creating a shockwave that covers 14.7 / 16.5 Expert Mode tiles. This slam will leave it extremely open to attacks as it recovers from being slammed into the ground.
    • This is the ONLY attack Crabulon has where its chance of occurring is not affected by any other sources, meaning it is very consistent in its appearances.

In Expert Mode

  • Crabulons idle time can lower heavily depending on if the player is too close to the boss or too far away.
  • The dash attack will leave a trail of spore gas along Crabulons path that will last for 2 seconds. This gas will inflict the Spored debuff.
  • The dropping slam attack will have Spored SkeletonsSpored Skeletons fall on top of the players location as Crabulon is held in the air above them. 4 of these projectiles will drop at a consistent rate before Crabulon itself falls.
  • At 10% health, Crabulon will enter a desperation phase in which:
    • A short cinematic will play showing Crabulons lifeless body falling to the ground, only for various mycelial roots impaling the corpse to lift it up. A visual effect will occur where mushroom gas leaks from the bottom of the screen. This is purely visual.
    • The body will be quickly dragged to the players location and slammed into the ground, in a very similar way to the dropping slam attack. However, rather than being dropped, the roots will continue to hold onto Crabulon and quickly lift it back up to slam it again.
    • This will be preformed 3 times before, on the 4th slam, Crabulon will become stuck in the ground for a short time, leaving it open to be attacked.
    • After every other slam, Spored Skeletons will be dislodged from the ceiling and fall as projectile in a similar way to Signathion's boulder attack.
    • After it is brought down to 5 health, the normal death behavior will occur.

In For The Worthy

  • Crabulons max idle time is lowered to 0.2 seconds, and as its health decreases can reach a minimum of 0.05 seconds.
  • The max amount of Spore Buds Crabulon can spawn is increased to 7.
  • The mortar Spore Bud will fire after 0.3 second charge-up.
  • The slam attack has no telegraph time and will cover a 17.5 tile area when dropped.
